Lane's Servant Cottages were designed by Leonard B. Willeke between late 1919-1920. Willeke also designed Edsel
Ford's first home in Indian Village, just east of downtown Detroit. The staff that used these buildings for their homes included the Butler, Gardener and Chauffeur. The buildings had a shared inner court area and were constructed at the same time as the
Gatehouse.
Not all of the staff employed at Fair Lane lived on the
estate. Most of the servants or staff either commuted back and forth daily via car or by the bus transportation system.
