ne of the most unique traditions established at the Fair Lane Estate, during the Ford's tenure, was the annual visit with Santa Claus at the Log Cabin Workshop. This magical Christmas event was enjoyed by the Ford grandchildren, nieces, nephews and in later years Greenfield Village Schools students.
The rustic log cabin Henry Ford built for Santa's use was located deep in the
woods, about a half-mile from the mansion. Children were brought to the site via horse drawn bobsleds (farm wagons when there was no snow). There they met a diminutive Santa
(played by a dwarf Ford employee) who allowed them their choice from a cabin full of new toys. Afterward, each child was given a hot bowl of Clara Ford's homemade
"snowflake soup" more commonly know as oyster stew, a treat to warm them through for the ride back home.
After
Henry Ford's death, the visits continued, ending only after the passing of
Clara Ford. The structure was torn down sometime during the 1950s.
Today
Santa again makes his annual visit to Fair Lane,
meeting with children in the Miniature Farmhouse which
now takes the place of the long lost Log Cabin
Workshop.
