The Living Room circa 1919

he Living Room provided space for greeting guests and enjoying the company of family and friends by the fireside. During the more than thirty years that the Fords lived here, many changes were made in this room.

Initially, the Living Room had portions of the walls covered with tapestry fabric stretched between  classical  "pillars." Eventually, the   fabric   was   replaced   with   French  walnut paneling. As styles changed, Mrs. Ford was encouraged by her daughter-in-law, Eleanor  Clay  Ford  and advised by her designer,

"Charles of London," to paint the room a putty color. It is believed that the brass plate was later added into the fireplace for facilitating a better draft. When the plate was designed, a few lines from Emerson’s poem "Essay on Friendship " were worked into the plate:

"If I were sure of thee,
Sure of thy capacity,
Sure to match my mood with thine,
I should never again think of trifles."

To complete the home's musical dimensions, an Estey organ was installed, with the organ console positioned to the north wall between the Music Room and Mrs. Ford’s Study. As interest levels waned the Fords decided to remove the organ and pipes, turning the organ pipe chamber adjacent to the Living Room into Mr. Ford’s Study.

" I never object when my husband puts his feet on a fine chair or table and scratches it . . . Our home is not a show place, but a place to live in and enjoy."
