The Gatehouse - Henry Ford Estate Fair Lane The Gatehouse - Henry Ford Estate Fair Lane

he Gatehouse was once located at the entrance to Fair Lane Drive, just off the north side of Michigan Avenue near what now is the site of the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Fair Lane Drive offered a pleasant and relaxed approach to the estate. One account described the lane thus: "the drive from the main gate is a mile long, through native trees and flowing shrubs, terminating in a sweeping circle at the entrance to the house."

A gatekeeper was assigned to monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. Visitors would access the estate by first stopping at the Gatehouse for approval to enter. At times there was a pre-approved list of special guests to assist the gatekeeper. When in question, the gatekeeper would call up to the residence to check for approval.
