uring
Henry Ford's residence, Fair
Lane's 3000 square foot Garage
housed more than mere Model
"T"s.
It was a storage place for a
number of Mr. Ford's early
vehicles, such as his first car,
the Quadricycle
. Clara Ford's
favorite Cadillacs and some of
son Edsel Ford's cars, including his
big Marmon, at one time could be found
inside.

Mr.
Ford's
Garage served also as a
corporate research lab where he could secretly examine
vehicles of other makes, secure
from the prying eyes of competitors. The
space was equipped with a turntable, an auto wash system
and a series of electrical
outlets, designed for charging
the hoped for but never realized
Edison-Ford electric cars.

Fordson Tractor |
|
From
1914 through 1916, land surrounding
Fair Lane
was the primary testing area for the Fordson
Tractor, the
"Model 'T' of the soil".
In 1938, experimental tractors were again
worked on, both at the garage
level and in the Experimental Laboratory
Room above.
Today,
through the generous
support of the Ford Family and Ford dealers
across the country, Henry
Ford's Garage has been |

restored. On display are a number of the Fords'
personal vehicles including Mr.
Ford's Model A Coupe,
the 1922
Lincoln "kitchen
truck" used on his
famous "vagabond" camping trips, and his
1942
Ford V8 sedan, the car Mr. Ford
rode in on his last day.
A
recent addition to the
collection is a replica
of
Mr. Ford's
famed
"Sweepstakes"
race car. In this car
Henry Ford beat
Alexander Winton during
"the Big Race"
of October 10, 1901. His
win attracted investors
and ultimately led to
his founding of the Ford
Motor Company. |
