he Early Rose Garden was designed in 1916 by Jens Jensen. This garden consisted of approximately 250 roses, with an oblong pond at the back, a players green behind it and a back drop of evergreen trees.
In 1930, New York designer Ellen Shipman was contracted to transform the Rose Garden into an English Garden. The earlier pond was removed and in its place was created a Tea House, wall and garden gates. In the center of the new English Garden, a lily pond was added and is present today. The English Garden had perennials and shrubs throughout the area of the garden.
