Mrs. Ford's electric boat, the "Callie B."

ust a few yards northwest of the residence, on the banks of the Rouge River, stands the Boathouse. Its  exterior of horizontal bands of rock was designed to match the strata levels of the a native rock garden located next to it.

An inlet from the river allowed entry for the "Callie B", Mrs. Ford's mahogany electric boat.   Mr. Ford feared for Mrs. Ford's safety on the river and  he often reminded Williams, a house servant, to be alert in case Mrs. Ford fell overboard. Williams  hoped that wouldn't happen for more than one reason; he was reluctant to tell Mr. Ford that he couldn't swim either.

The channel leading from the Boat House to the Rouge River was filled in during the early 1950s due to raw sewage and pollution from the up river communities. Slag from the Rouge Complex was used to fill in the channel.
